Apple Unveils Its First Foldable iPhone — and the $1,999 Price Is Turning Heads

September 10, 2026 | Cupertino, California

Apple has officially entered the foldable smartphone market, unveiling the iPhone Duo, the company’s first iPhone designed to fold open into a larger display.

The new device was introduced Wednesday during Apple’s product event in Cupertino, California. It represents one of the biggest changes to the physical design of the iPhone in years.

A $1,999 Foldable iPhone

The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, putting it firmly at the premium end of the smartphone market.

When closed, the phone features a 5.4-inch outer display and is roughly passport-sized. Opening the device reveals a much larger 7.6-inch inner display, giving users additional space for videos, games and multitasking.

Apple says users can run two apps side-by-side on the larger screen.

What’s Inside Apple’s New iPhone?

The Duo is powered by Apple’s new A20 Pro chip and includes a vapor-chamber cooling system designed to improve performance and efficiency.

The device also supports Apple Pencil and uses Touch ID integrated into the side button. Storage configurations will reach as high as 2TB.

Apple says the Duo is its thinnest iPhone ever when the device is fully opened.

When Can You Buy It?

Consumers will have to wait a little longer before getting their hands on one.

Apple says pre-orders begin October 16, with the iPhone Duo officially becoming available on October 23.

The company also unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, updated Apple Watch models and a new generation of AirPods during the event.

The biggest question now is whether consumers will be willing to spend nearly $2,000 on a foldable iPhone — and whether Apple’s arrival can finally push foldable phones into the mainstream.
