NATO Allies Foiled Russian Operation Near Critical Undersea Cables, Officials Say

September 10, 2026 | Europe

NATO allies disrupted a covert Russian operation near strategically important undersea communications cables in Arctic waters earlier this year, according to a Reuters report published Thursday.

The operation took place near Svalbard, Norway, where subsea fiber-optic cables provide crucial communications links between the remote Arctic archipelago and mainland Norway.

Russian Vessels Were Closely Tracked

According to Reuters, Britain, Norway and the United States were involved in tracking Russian vessels and submersibles operating in the area.

Western officials believe the Russian activity was connected to GUGI, a specialized Russian military organization associated with deep-sea operations.

The Russian vessels were confronted during the NATO operation and ultimately left without damaging the cables, according to the report.

Why These Undersea Cables Matter

Undersea fiber-optic cables form a critical part of modern communications infrastructure, carrying enormous amounts of internet and data traffic.

The cables near Svalbard are particularly important because they connect the archipelago — including infrastructure associated with the SvalSat satellite ground station — with mainland Norway.

Western governments have become increasingly concerned about the vulnerability of this infrastructure as military activity beneath European waters increases.

NATO Increasing Underwater Surveillance

No cables were damaged during the incident.

However, the episode has contributed to NATO’s efforts to strengthen surveillance and protection of critical infrastructure beneath European waters.

The incident also highlights a growing security challenge that is largely invisible to the public: protecting the network of cables lying on the ocean floor that modern communications depend on.
