FDA Investigates Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Broccoli Sprouts Across Four U.S. States

September 10, 2026 | United States

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak linked to recalled broccoli sprouts.

So far, 22 illnesses have been reported across Idaho, Montana, Utah and Washington, according to the FDA. Two people have been hospitalized, while no deaths have been reported.

Broccoli Sprouts Recalled

Investigators identified Evergreen Fresh Sprouts LLC of Moyie Springs, Idaho, as the common grower of broccoli sprouts eaten by people who later became sick.

The company initiated a recall on September 4 after a broccoli sprout sample collected and analyzed by Montana officials tested positive for Salmonella. Further genetic analysis determined that the sample contained the same strain associated with the illnesses.

The recalled broccoli sprouts were packaged in plastic bags and clamshell containers with expiration dates of September 7, 9, 11, 14 and 16.

Confirmed distribution included Idaho, Montana and Washington, although the FDA says the products may have reached additional states.

What Investigators Found

Health officials interviewed 19 people who became ill. All 19 reported eating sprouts, while 17 specifically reported eating broccoli sprouts.

Illnesses currently linked to the outbreak began between July 7 and August 26.

FDA Warns Consumers Not to Eat Recalled Products

The FDA says consumers, restaurants and retailers should not eat, serve or sell the recalled broccoli sprouts.

People who purchased them should also clean and sanitize surfaces or containers that came into contact with the product to reduce the risk of cross-contamination.

Salmonella infection can cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps. Symptoms typically begin within 12 to 72 hours after eating contaminated food and usually last four to seven days.

The investigation remains ongoing, and federal health officials say they will provide additional information as it becomes available.
