Millions of residents across parts of Southern California are dealing with dangerous heat as an Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect Thursday, with temperatures forecast to climb as high as 108°F in some locations.

The National Weather Service office in Los Angeles/Oxnard said temperatures ranging from approximately 88°F to 108°F are expected across affected areas of southwest California.

Dangerous Heat Raises Health Concerns

Forecasters warn that extreme temperatures significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Humid conditions could make the heat feel even more uncomfortable, while people spending extended periods outdoors face an increased risk of heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Residents are being advised to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight.

Never Leave Children or Pets Inside Vehicles

Officials are emphasizing one particularly important warning during the heat event: children and pets should never be left unattended inside parked vehicles.

Temperatures inside a vehicle can rise to deadly levels within minutes, even when someone expects to be away for only a short period.

People are also encouraged to check on relatives and neighbors who may be particularly vulnerable to extreme heat.

Outdoor Workers Urged to Take Precautions

For people who must work outside, officials recommend frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned areas.

Anyone showing signs of heat stroke should be moved to a cooler location immediately and emergency services should be contacted.

The current Extreme Heat Warning is scheduled to remain in effect until 8 p.m. PDT Thursday, September 10, according to the National Weather Service alert.
