A massive search-and-rescue operation is underway in the Philippines after a passenger ferry caught fire near the popular tourist destination of Coron, leaving at least five people dead and more than 80 unaccounted for.

The MV June Aster was traveling from Manila toward Coron when the fire broke out Wednesday evening. The vessel was carrying 134 people — 117 passengers and 17 crew members, according to authorities.

Dozens Rescued From the Burning Ferry

The Philippine Coast Guard said 43 people had been rescued as of Reuters’ latest report.

Survivors described a rapidly developing emergency aboard the ship, with some people jumping into the sea as flames spread.

The Coast Guard, Philippine military, local fishermen and private vessels have joined the effort to locate survivors. An aircraft has also been deployed to assist the search.

Rough Seas Complicate the Search

Rescue crews are facing difficult conditions.

Strong currents and rough seas caused the damaged ferry to drift away from the location where it initially issued its distress call, complicating efforts to account for everyone who was aboard.

Photos and video released by the Philippine Coast Guard show the vessel burning heavily at sea while rescuers worked nearby.

What Caused the Fire?

The cause has not yet been determined.

Reuters reported that survivors described hearing a loud explosion from the cargo-hold area before thick smoke appeared. The ferry was carrying vehicles and other cargo.

Authorities have launched an investigation, while the vessel’s operator, Atienza Inter-Island Ferries, said it was cooperating with officials.

Numbers Could Still Change

Because search operations remain active, officials have cautioned that the number of missing, rescued and confirmed fatalities could change.

For now, rescuers are continuing to search the waters around Palawan for those still unaccounted for.
