Americans Over 50 Are Being Warned About a Common Phone Scam

A simple phone call can sometimes turn into a serious problem for unsuspecting Americans.

Consumer protection officials continue to warn the public about scammers who contact people by phone and pretend to represent banks, government agencies, delivery companies, insurance providers or other familiar organizations.

The caller may claim that there is a problem with an account, an unpaid bill, a suspicious transaction or an urgent security issue.

The goal is often to create panic and pressure the person into acting immediately.

One Warning Sign You Should Never Ignore

Experts say Americans should be especially cautious when a caller demands personal information or insists that money must be sent immediately.

Legitimate organizations generally provide ways for customers to verify a request independently.

If you receive a suspicious call, do not feel pressured to make a decision immediately. Hang up and contact the organization using a phone number from an official website, statement or card.

Why Older Americans Are Often Targeted

Scammers frequently target people they believe may have savings, retirement accounts or other financial resources.

That makes retirees and older adults an especially important group to educate about common scams.

Family members can also help by talking with parents, grandparents and older relatives about suspicious calls and unexpected requests for money.

Take a Few Seconds Before You Respond

If someone calls and tells you that you must act right now, that should be a reason to slow down — not speed up.

Never share passwords, Social Security numbers, banking information or verification codes with an unexpected caller simply because they claim to be from a trusted organization.

If you receive a suspicious call, take a moment, hang up and verify it independently.
