Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania made an unusual appearance at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas, fueling fresh speculation about his increasingly strained relationship with his own party.

Fetterman appeared in a prerecorded video Wednesday night to introduce Pennsylvania’s Republican Sen. Dave McCormick, whom he described as a friend and “a great American.”

Fetterman Says He Will Work With Trump

Standing with a Pennsylvania steel mill visible behind him, Fetterman emphasized patriotism and opposition to political extremes.

He also said he would work with President Donald Trump to defend Pennsylvania’s steel industry. His message was subsequently promoted by a White House social-media account.

The appearance was particularly striking because it came during a Republican convention designed to rally voters ahead of November’s crucial midterm elections.

Is Fetterman Switching Parties?

Despite the immediate speculation, Fetterman says no.

After his appearance, the senator released a statement describing himself as a “lifelong Democrat” and saying he would remain with the party if Democrats win control of the Senate in November.

He has repeatedly rejected suggestions that he plans to become a Republican, even as he has broken with Democrats on several major issues.

His Relationship With Democrats Has Changed Dramatically

Fetterman was once a popular figure among Pennsylvania Democrats, but that relationship has deteriorated.

He has supported some Trump nominees, voted with Republicans during major Senate battles and strongly criticized parts of the progressive left. His positions on Israel and the Iran war have also put him at odds with many Democrats.

Polling cited by AP illustrates the dramatic political shift: an August New York Times poll found only about 2 in 10 registered Pennsylvania Democrats viewed Fetterman favorably, while 73% of Republicans had a favorable view.

Why This Could Matter for Control of the Senate

The controversy is attracting additional attention because the 2026 midterm elections could produce an extremely close Senate.

Democrats currently hold 47 seats and need to gain four Republican-held seats to secure a majority. If the chamber ends up narrowly divided, individual senators could wield enormous influence.

For now, however, Fetterman’s message is clear: he may be willing to work with Republicans, but he says he remains a Democrat.
