Gloria Steinem, One of America’s Most Influential Voices, Dies at 92

Gloria Steinem, the pioneering journalist, author and activist who became one of the most recognizable voices of the American women’s movement, has died at the age of 92.

Steinem died Wednesday at her home in New York City, according to a statement from her foundation. Her foundation said she passed away peacefully, surrounded by people who loved her. A cause of death has not been announced.

For more than five decades, Steinem remained one of the most influential figures in American public life.

A Life That Changed American History

Steinem first became widely known as a journalist before emerging as a leading voice in the women’s movement.

She co-founded Ms. Magazine and helped establish several organizations dedicated to women’s rights and equality.

Her journalism also brought national attention to issues that were rarely discussed openly at the time.

One of her most famous early investigations involved going undercover at the New York Playboy Club in the 1960s. The experience became a landmark piece of journalism and helped establish her reputation as a reporter willing to challenge powerful institutions.

Remembered By Generations

After news of her death became public, tributes began arriving from prominent Americans who knew or admired her work.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris, Hillary Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Jane Fonda, Barbra Streisand and others were among those who paid tribute to Steinem and reflected on the impact she had on generations of women.

Steinem was also honored with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013, one of the highest civilian honors in the United States.

Her Legacy Lives On

Steinem remained active well into her later years, continuing to write, speak and participate in conversations about equality and social change.

For supporters, she represented courage and persistence.

For critics, some of her political positions were deeply controversial.

But few would dispute the size of her influence.

Her career stretched across journalism, politics, activism and literature, and her name became closely connected with one of the most significant social movements in modern American history.

Gloria Steinem is gone at 92, but the conversations she helped bring into the national spotlight will continue long after her passing.
