Born to Jewish parents who fled Nazi Berlin for New York in 1939, Henry Winkler struggled through a childhood marked by undiagnosed dyslexia. Labeled lazy by teachers and called *Dummer Hund* (“dumb dog”) by his frustrated parents, he survived by leaning heavily on his sharp memory and a natural gift for improvisation.
