Nearly 200,000 Salvadorans in U.S. Could Keep Legal Protection as Deadline Passes Without Trump Administration Action

September 10, 2026 | United States

Nearly 200,000 Salvadoran immigrants living in the United States have received a potentially significant reprieve after a key deadline passed without the Trump administration formally ending their Temporary Protected Status.

Under federal law, if the Department of Homeland Security does not make a decision by the required deadline, the protections are generally automatically extended for six months, according to the Associated Press.

What Is Temporary Protected Status?

Temporary Protected Status, commonly known as TPS, allows eligible immigrants from certain countries experiencing dangerous conditions to temporarily live and work legally in the United States.

El Salvador received TPS designation following two devastating earthquakes in 2001.

Since then, thousands of Salvadoran families have built lives in communities across the United States while relying on the program for legal protection.

A Crucial Deadline Passed

Protections for Salvadorans had been extended through September 9, 2026.

But the Department of Homeland Security did not publicly announce a termination before the required deadline.

That silence is important because federal law provides for an automatic six-month extension when the government does not make the required determination in time.

Immigration advocates therefore believe Salvadoran TPS holders can remain protected for another six months, although they are still waiting for formal confirmation and guidance from the government.

Trump Administration Has Ended TPS for Other Countries

The development is particularly notable because President Donald Trump’s administration has moved aggressively to end temporary protections for immigrants from several other countries.

More than one million people have been affected by TPS termination efforts during Trump’s second term, according to AP.

El Salvador’s situation is different in part because President Nayib Bukele has maintained a close relationship with the Trump administration.

Why This Matters Beyond Immigration

Salvadorans represent one of the largest immigrant communities in the United States.

They also maintain strong economic ties with their home country. Salvadorans living abroad sent nearly $10 billion in remittances to El Salvador last year, according to figures cited by AP.

For families who have spent years uncertain about whether they would be allowed to remain in the United States, the missed deadline could provide at least several more months of stability.

However, it is not permanent legal status, and the administration could still make future decisions affecting the program.

For now, hundreds of thousands of Salvadorans and their families are waiting for official clarification about what comes next.
