For 798 days, Cali watched other dogs leave.

Some were adopted within days. Others needed only a few weeks.

Cali stayed.

The five-year-old rescue dog had been taken into care by Wags & Walks in Los Angeles in 2023. At the time, she was pregnant. She eventually gave birth to 11 puppies, and one by one, every puppy found a home.

But Cali was still waiting.

The rescue team described her as a loving dog who struggled around unfamiliar people. That made it harder for potential adopters to see the affectionate personality that staff members knew so well.

Then, after more than two years, someone saw her story online.

Crystal had recently lost her own dog and wasn’t sure when she would be ready to adopt again. While browsing rescue videos, she kept coming back to Cali.

Something about her stayed with her.

She submitted an application.

When Crystal finally met Cali in person, the long wait was over.

Cali went home.

Her new owner says the dog quickly began settling into her new surroundings, exploring the house, going for walks and discovering what life outside a shelter could feel like.

After nearly 800 days of waiting, Cali finally had the thing she had been missing all along.

A family.

Her story is a reminder that sometimes the dogs who wait the longest aren’t unwanted.

They are simply waiting for the right person to see them.
