The United States and China could be moving toward a new agreement to reduce tariffs on billions of dollars worth of goods, potentially easing some of the trade pressure between the world’s two largest economies.
Chinese officials said Thursday that negotiators are working toward reciprocal tariff reductions covering about $30 billion in goods, according to the Associated Press.
Trump and Xi Are Set to Meet
The announcement comes less than two weeks before President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to meet in Washington on September 24.
It would be their third face-to-face meeting within the past year.
Trade is expected to be one of the biggest issues discussed during the meeting, with both governments looking for ways to stabilize economic relations after a period of intense tariff disputes.
$30 Billion in Goods Could Be Affected
According to China’s Commerce Ministry, negotiators are trying to identify equivalent amounts of what officials describe as “non-sensitive” goods on each side.
Tariffs on those products could then be reduced reciprocally.
Exactly which products would receive lower tariffs has not yet been publicly detailed, so consumers and businesses will have to wait for additional information before knowing which industries could benefit most.
Why Tariffs Matter to Americans
Tariffs are taxes charged on imported products.
Although they are collected from importers, companies can sometimes pass part or all of the additional cost on to consumers through higher prices.
That means changes in tariffs can eventually affect the prices Americans pay for everything from electronics and household products to machinery and other imported goods.
Lower tariffs do not guarantee immediate price reductions, but they can reduce some of the costs facing companies importing products into the United States.
A Bigger Deadline Is Approaching
The U.S. and China previously reached a tariff truce, but that agreement is scheduled to expire on November 10.
That deadline is adding pressure to the negotiations.
Analysts cited by AP believe a sweeping trade agreement remains difficult, but more limited tariff reductions could potentially be announced around the September 24 Trump-Xi meeting.
For American businesses and consumers, the coming two weeks could therefore be important.
A deal would represent another attempt by Washington and Beijing to reduce trade tensions — but until negotiations are completed, no new tariff reductions should be considered final.
